Description

Belize is located in Central America which is bordered by Mexico to the north, Caribbean Sea to the east and, Guatemala to the south and west. With 22,960 square kilometres of land area and a population of merely 333,200 inhabitants, Belize holds the smallest population in Central America. The capital is Belmopan; this city has an estimated population of 20,000.

Weather

There are 2 seasons in Belize: the dry season and a rainy season. The dry season is when the majority of tourists visit the country: from December to May. Rainy season, on the other hand, lasts from June to November. For such a small country, there is an immense diversity in the amounts of rain received.

Language

Although English is the official language of Belize, only 4 percent of the inhabitants speak it as their first language. Kriol is spoken as the first language of nearly 33 percent of Belizeans and it is regarded by some linguists to be a dialect of English, as the two are mutually intelligible.

Currency

The official currency of Belize is the Belize dollar. The economic growth of Belize depends mostly on agriculture and tourism. The trade in the agricultural industry is the key factor of the development of Belize’s economy.

Tourist Attractions

Xunantunich is a must see for all tourists. The Maya ruins of Xunantunich are located atop a ridge above the Mopan River, within sight of the Guatemala border. Xunantunich is composed of a series of six plazas surrounded by more than 26 temples and palaces.

Another major attraction of Belize is the Belize Zoo. It is a home to more than 125 animals of about 48 species which are all native to Belize. The innate surroundings of Belize are left completely intact within the zoo. The thick and natural vegetation is separated only by gravel trails through the forest.
