Japan is an island country located in the Pacific Ocean, East Asia. It is made up of 6,852 Islands; Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku islands account for 97% of Japan’s land area. Japan neighbours North Korea to the North-West, South Korea to the West and Taiwan to the far South. It is the world’s 10th most populated country with a population of 127 million people. The country covers an area of 377,944 square kilometers. Japan’s capital is Tokyo, a city with a population of over 30 million people.

Japan’s weather is generally temperate though weather patterns differ dramatically between regions due to the country’s large north-south extension. The best time to visit Japan is between October and December. If you enjoy skiing, then March is ideal.

Japan’s official currency is the Japanese Yen. Though the country faces major challenges including natural disaster and poor leadership, its currency remains comparatively strong in the global market. As of 2010, Japan had the third largest national economy in the world.
