The Mississippi river, where the state’s name is derived flows along the state’s western boundary. Because of its humid subtropical climate, Mississippi has long summers with short mild winters. The temperatures often vary in the summer from one region to another. During winter however the area around Mississippi sound is considerably warmer than other areas. The snow falls all over the state with the exception of the southern regions of the state.
