Description

Portugal is a country located on in South Western Europe on the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal is the westernmost country of Europe. Portugal neighbours Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and Spain to the north and east. The Atlantic Islands of Azores and Madeira are part of Portugal. Portugal covers a land area of 92,090 square kilometers and has a population of over 10 million people. Portugal’s capital is Lisbon, a city with a population of over 545,000 people.

Portugal’s climate is generally Mediterranean. The best months to visit Portugal are April and October.

Language

Portugal’s official language is Portuguese. Mirandese, a regional recognised language is also spoken in Portugal. Over 96.8% of Portugal’s population speak Portuguese.

Currency

The official currency in Portugal is the Euro (EUR). The country’s economy 43rd worldwide, tourism is a major contributor to Portugal’s economy.

Tourist Attractions

There are many interesting places to visit and enjoy in Portugal. You will discover the Castle of St. George and its panoramic view, the cathedral with its cloister, the Jesuit church of Sao Roque with its magnificent tiles, and the district Bairro Alto with its shops, restaurants and “casas do fado”.

Another location to visit is the ancient commercial port city, where you will see the tower of Belem and the Jeronimos Monastery with their unique architecture. Museums worth visiting include the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, the National Museum of Ancient Art, National Museum of Azulejos and the Maritime Museum.
