West Virginia

Description

West Virginia is a State in the southeastern part of the United States of America. It borders Pennsylvania on the northeast, Kentucky on the southwest, Virginia on the southeast and Ohio on the northwest. West Virginia was formed during the American Civil War and was initially a Confederate state. West Virginia’s capital is Charleston and currently has a population of more than 1.8 million people.

Weather

West Virginia has a rather humid and subtropical climate. They experience hot summers and only mild winters. Some of the highland areas typically experience more moderate temperatures; this can generally be found to the South. West Virginia’s rainfall is typically about 32 inches per year and this will occur during the months of April through to September. You might also find areas with dense fog, especially in the valleys.

Language

West Virginia’s official language is English. Only a very small percentage of the population, less than 3%, speak other languages in their home. The main ancestry groups that can be found in this state are English, German, Italian and Irish.

Currency

The official currency of West Virginia is the U.S. Dollar. This state is also the 62nd largest economy in the world and their GDP growth is the 7th best in the entire United States. West Virginia’s main resource is coal and it is currently one of the top coal producers in the United States.

Tourist Attractions

West Virginia has a variety of parks and forests for visitors to enjoy. Among these is the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest, which offers a lot of outdoor recreation activities for the whole family.  West Virginia also offers some great heritage sites that will walk tourists through the Civil War, colonial life and the railroads of the olden days.
